Email Q&A with the CDC 1/27/2016. It appears that in the Trends in Tuberculosis Fact Sheet from the CDC all of the TB cases are active TB cases which would essentailly be all human TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). This does not include latent TB. --------------- Original Message --------------- From: [cdcinfoforms@cdc.gov] Sent: 1/27/2016 11:38 AM To: cdcinfo@cdc.gov Subject: CDC-INFO: Inquiry Subject: Trends in Tuberculosis, 2014 Fact Sheet From: General Public Email Address: john5xyz@yahoo.com Your Question: I'm curious about the statistics on TB from the Trends in Tuberculosis, 2014 Fact Sheet http://www.cdc.gov/tb/publications/factsheets/statistics/tbtrends.htm Does the number of cases in the CDC report include latent TB? TB infection is often classified as active, latent or extrapulmonary in the literature. Most cases are either latent or active. Are the numbers for both human and bovine (in humans) TB cases given. Human TB = Mycobacterium tuberculosis Bovine TB = Mycobacterium bovis (both species can infect humans) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Monday, February 1, 2016 4:06 PM, CDC INFO wrote: Thank you for your inquiry to CDC-INFO. Your request for information on the trends in Tuberculosis 2014 fact sheet was forwarded to subject-matter experts at the appropriate division. We hope you find their response helpful. You recently inquired regarding the Trends in Tuberculosis, 2014 fact sheet. The number of cases on this fact sheet are cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) disease. Some of these TB cases may include mycobacterium Bovis (M.Bovis) which is part of the M. tuberculosis complex. Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is not reported to CDC. There is no national surveillance system in the U.S. for latent TB infection LTBI. Only cases of TB disease are reported to CDC, and people with LTBI have no evidence of TB disease. For detailed TB case definitions please see appendices A and B of the Reported Tuberculosis in the United States, 2014 http://www.cdc.gov/tb/statistics/reports/2014/default.htm.
